Locating regions of differential variability in DNA and protein sequences.

In the comparison of DNA and protein sequences between species or between paralogues or among individuals within a species or population, there is often some indication that different regions of the sequence are divergent or polymorphic to different degrees, indicating differential constraint or diversifying selection operating in different regions of the sequence. The problem is to test statis...

Locating protein-coding regions in human DNA sequences by a multiple sensor-neural network approach.

Genes in higher eukaryotes may span tens or hundreds of kilobases with the protein-coding regions accounting for only a few percent of the total sequence. Identifying genes within large regions of uncharacterized DNA is a difficult undertaking and is currently the focus of many research efforts. We describe a reliable computational approach for locating protein-coding portions of genes in anony...

Recognition of protein coding regions in DNA sequences.

We give a test for protein coding regions which is based on simple and universal differences between protein-coding and noncoding DNA. The test is simple enough to use without a computer and is completely objective. The test has been thoroughly proven on 400,000 bases of sequence data: it misclassifies 5% of the regions tested and gives an answer of "No Opinion" one fifth of the time. We predic...

Locating transmembrane domains in protein sequences

We have developed a new approach for locating transmembrane domains in protein sequences based on hydrophobicity analysis and backpropagation neural network or k-nearest-neighbor as classifiers. Our system was able to locate over 98% of the transmembrane domains and the total accuracy including overpredictions was above 95%.
